Hulu UK 'Offering Equity To Broadcasters', But Still Has No Content
Friday, July 3, 2009A flurry of stories this week bit again at Hulu‘s hoped-for upcoming UK launch, again betting on a September launch. There’s little new here - We learned nine months ago the News Corp/NBC/Disney (NYSE: DIS) US online TV venture wanted to open shop in the UK depending on the outcome of the Competition Commission’s Kangaroo inquiry. And, after Hulu hired an overseas-focused SVP, NBCU International told us in March it was wooing UK broadcasters for content acquisition. Still, the latest threads are…
—“Hulu is offering British broadcasters equity stakes in Hulu UK plus a share of online advertising,” says Kate Bulkley in Broadcast. “It is offering significant minimum guarantees in exchange for a good line-up of shows immediately after transmission on TV.”
—ITV (LSE: ITV) online director Ben McOwen Wilson: “As you’d expect post-Kangaroo, we are looking at a number of possibilities for our archive content. We do think an aggregator in the UK has a role to play.” Via Broadcast.
—The SVP, Johannes Larcher, reckons the “UK is very ready for a product like Hulu ... Project Kangaroo has opened up certain opportunities we would like to exploit.” Via Telegraph.co.uk.
