Integrating Streaming Media

Friday, July 17, 2009

The site that I found that integrated streaming media very eloquently was http://espn.go.com (ESPN). The home page is filled with great amounts of information and right there in the front page is a large window of a video that tells one of the top stories for the day. The element that is great about how ESPN.com handles this is that they don’t just start playing the video as you open the page. Rather, there is a play button on in the middle of the box that allows you to press it and watch the video when you are ready or even skip it this time.

The message being communicated by using this video to tell that the story of the day is wonderful. It shows that ESPN.com is cutting edge. It also allows for additional advertising income for the site as well by starting the video with an ad. What I don’t like about it is that you can’t stop it. Once it starts going, it keeps going on to new stories no matter what you do until you exit from the site.

Overall, the use of integrated streaming media on ESPN.com is very well done.
