1UP For Haiti - a video game tournament fundraiser for Haiti crisis relief

It’s been nearly a month since Haiti was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, taking the lives of over 100,000 and leaving 1.5 million homeless. Nearly 97% of Port-au-Prince schools are destroyed and it’s been estimated that rebuilding the city may take decades. People are in desperate need of aid, from all of us. Why not help out by doing something competitive and fun, surrounded by awesome people?

Join us at New Work City on Saturday, February 13th for a fundraiser for the people of Haiti. We’ll be playing Mario Kart in a tournament-style face-off, and all buy-ins will go to Haiti relief efforts. There’s a suggested donation of $20 per person to enter. There will be more games to play, as well as drinks, snacks, and great people. Bring your friends and give what you can. Hope to see you there.

A Full Night of Multi-Cultural Musical Talents and Artistic Genres. This is the start of many wonderful events occurring in 2010. A group of bands are coming together to support the first of a series of global causes at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on February 16 (“Fat Tuesday”) at 8pm. In this cross-cultural world-themed Mardi Gras show, the artists will raise awareness of the incredible strength, courage and resiliency of women who continue to struggle in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo. Simon Kashama of the Pulitzer Prize winning play “Ruined” will lead the way. Page Meets Stage Series Presents: Yusef Komunyakaa meets Tyehimba Jess

Please join us for an evening of poetry read by Yusef Komunyakaa and Tyehimba Jess as part of the Page Meets Stage Series at the Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery (between Houston and Bleecker) on February 24th at 8:00 Page Meets Stage strives to bring together two different poets, one from a more academic background, and one who focuses on stage performance. Yusef Komunyakaa was born in 1947 in Louisiana, at the outset of the civil rights movement. He served in the army in Vietnam in 1969-1970 as the managing editor of the Southern Cross and earned a bronze star. He started writing Poetry in 1973 and earned his M.A. and M.F.A. in Creative Writing by 1979. Komunyakaa gained notoriety with Copacetic in 1984, a book of poetry heavily influenced by jazz. He won awards on his following books, and has been cited for by poets such as William Matthews and Robert Hass as being among the best writing on the war in Vietnam. Detroit born Tyehimba Jess’ first book of poetry, “Leadbelly,” is a winner of the 2004 National Poetry Series. He has been described as a “rare poet who bridges slam and academic poetry.” His work has been anthologized in many publications, and he has been honored with many awards, such as The Chicago Sun Times Poetry Award in 2001, and the Whiting Writers’ Award in 2006. He also served as Chicago’s Poetry ambassador to Accra, Ghana. Hosting between 20 and 30 shows a week the Bowery Poetry Club is proud of our place in the lineage of populist art: the Yiddish theater, burlesque, vaudeville, beat poetry, jazz, and punk that gave the Bowery its name.

Hoop School - Hooping Instruction/Hoop Sculpt/Hoop Story

An exciting hoopdance series that will push you to learn WAY faster than you could figure it out on your own. Each series will feature a guest instructor for a day to pass on his or her best gems of “hoopocity”. Why struggle through months and years of frustrating trial and error trying to decipher all the cool tricks by yourself like I did (and many expert hoopers did) when you can take advantage of our collective knowledge and experience, served to you on a silver platter? Hoosculpt is a fun-conventional fitness class for beginners. No experience necessary. Join us for a fun, funky, fabulous adventure into fitness that will challenge your idea of “working out”. Using only adult hoops and your own body weight, we’ll boost our stamina, core strength, coordination, and flexibility. Hoop moves like jump-throughs and revolving doors, partner up for circuit training, mix it up with games: rainbow ring, hoop limbo, hoop chaser, hoopstacle course. And maybe you’ll learn a few fancy tricks in the process. This is not a dance class; you will Sweat. Hoopstory: An affordable, weekly hoop jam for those who prefer something loose and casual. Write your own story! No rules, no teachers, no formal instruction. Learn from your friends and peers. We provide great tunes and a nice space: centrally located, climate controlled, sprung floors, full length mirrors & bathrooms. You just show up with $6 and a hoop and play.

This Spore will focus on Burning Man, a phenomenon that has revolutionized and broadened the scope of gifting’s potential.
