Are you purchasing the new iphone3g?

July 2nd, 2008 12:19 favicon me.dm // phil campbell // centralized webmedia experiments

lifecast-thumb.pngSo next friday will see the new iphone 3g launched in the uk at 7:02am across the whole of england. This time around i will be purchasing one so i can play with the new gps features and the fact it has 3g - finally. I am working on launching something neat for next friday for the event. Here is how you can help!

"I'm looking for people that might be purchasing one for the first time or indeed upgrading from the original iphone version1. Ideally you will be producing media already online either on flickr/qik/seesmic/twitter and you can forward me or leave details in my comments about your account. I will then using my rezpondr system pull all this media together into one big mashup so we can see the events unfold country (world?) wide as it happens.

The event at the sleepydog office is quite special because they are also launching a little alpha/beta application called lifecast which is a test bed really to see how applications would on the iphone store and also to document from unboxing to installation how well the software works (if at all) on the new 3g v2 firmware. It should make an interesting day and i really hope we can get the application up and on the itunes store in time.

I have created a QIK EVENT group here so if you have a qik enabled camera (old iphone or maybe an n95) please do stream from the que, inside the store - even your unboxing and we will put it on the site with credit to you and your blog/source.

Really excited to finally get my hands on the iphone and having an application to put on it as well on the same day just really adds to overall excitement - what can work, what can go wrong. Pretty cool stuff for a developer to see working. The lifecast software itself will be a little posting app that can post to some sources on the internet and i hope to see it expand in terms of functionality over the coming months wrapping in some of the "secret" sauce as toby calls it from the other project work they have ongoing.

Please leave me a message in the comments section if you are up for this. Should make for a fun packed day - if your around market harborough on the friday drop in i guess we should have cakes and party food? :)

Some Event Linkage for next Friday.

Netflix Value Proposition

July 2nd, 2008 06:10 favicon Psychic Plague Panacea

mascarah:

I am interested to know what people’s average cost per movie “rental” is? For example, since January 1, 2008, I have watched 41 movies via Netflix and I have the $13.99 per 2-movies-at-a-time plan. So I’ve paid about $2.10 per movie including tax. I wonder what $$ per movie most people come in around? Any takers?

I was watching all of The Wire and now, all of LOST on the three per week unlimited plan since April but I’m going to either quit or cut back to one at a time unlimited soon. It’s not that I don’t like LOST or the occasional movie I order.

I’ve been sitting on Battle Royale for almost a week and LOST is OK… I just don’t have much time to watch because I’m finally starting Plate Show (first show segment this week) and I have so many tasks to take care of in preparation (finishing the web site, planning shows, booking guests, etc.) that there is little time to  watch a DVD—or even to SLEEP for that matter!

My cost per “rental” from Netflix is 94¢ per DVD since April when I decided to max out on watching these shows and switched to that plan. I’ve watched 54 DVDs (almost all Wired and LOST series discs, usually a whole disk at a time and sometimes two in one night) in these three months. It’s no wonder I’m burned out and needed to start doing something else, right?

So today and tomorrow i am away from the computer and have had little time to do any detailed posts purely down to be heavily into development right now. I expect these moments of quiet time to lift in about 3 weeks time when hopefully i make it to podcamp boston3 (i hope)

making a deal with the devil... are you serious?

(note to self: do not invite campaign contributors from gmail contacts)

I only selected a few people I know and have/d some level of respect for. I got a few less heated “thanks but no” replies, but this is the most comical/ridiculous of the obvious (?) parroted talk radio replies:

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!
I hope you didn’t mean to send that to me.  I realize the country is struggling, but making a deal with the devil will not solve anything!

Kiss My Ass OPEC!

I’m surprised this got through the strict censorship that normally would not allow profanity (even when abbreviated) on a vanity plate. Of course, there have been cases in which a state has revoked (and demanded the return of) certain vanity plates after issuance.

This one is a classic and certainly a sign of the times. I’ll definitely keep my eyes open for KMA OPEC if I travel any deeper into VA.
