Both Sides of the Mouth
by AngieWasn't it a bit harder to pay attention in 2008 than it was in 2007?

8. Santogold by Santogold
Santogold burst onto both the independent and mainstream music scene in 2008. With her undeniably unique and talented voice, Santogold blends funk, hip-hop, rock, and reggae into an infectious combination. Coming to a Converse ad near you.
mp3 Starstruck

7. Youth Novels by Lykke Li
The incredibly pretty Swede, Lykke Li, was virtually unknown until 2008. Youth Novels' "Let it Fall" catapulted her into the spotlight earlier this year and made her a household name (in the homes of young, independent music listeners, anyway).
mp3 Dance Dance Dance

6. Hold On Now, Youngster... by Los Campesinos!
Los Campesinos! actually came out with two albums in 2008, Hold On Now, Youngster... and We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. "You! Me! Dancing!" was the ultimate tie-breaker. The relaxed riffs in the beginning build up perfectly to an almost overwhelming mess of sound that, once at its peak, immediately drops into a fun, if noisy, melody that we have come to expect from virtually all Campesinos songs.
mp3 You! Me! Dancing!
5. Dear Science by TV On The Radio
Confession: I threw up at my first and only TV On The Radio concert (I have since learned that I am allergic to alcohol). However. I still managed to fully enjoy myself from the floor surrounded by my vomit. That's how great this band is. Although I must admit that I enjoyed a bit more than Return To Cookie Mountain a bit more than Dear Science, songs like "Halfway Home" make this album worthy enough to be in anyone's top five.
mp3 Halfway Home

4. At Mount Zoomer by Wolf Parade
Wolf Parade has long been a favorite band of mine, which made the release of At Mount Zoomer a highly anticipated occasion. The album did not disappoint. The band is as fresh as ever and a touch brighter than when we heard them in Apologies to Queen Mary.
mp3 The Grey Estates

3. Oracular Spectacular by MGMT
Before I say anything else, I must tell you that "Kids" is an incredibly infectious song. Listen to it now. Okay. Now that that's out of my system, this duo from Brooklyn has created a masterpiece with Oracular Spectacular. There will be those that tell you that they're annoying. Don't listen to them, it's just the way they sing. Their psychedelic pop is complex and enticing and the shit.
mp3 Kids

2. Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust by Sigur Rós
Can you pronounce the album? Really? My favorite band from Iceland has released their most different album to date. With more guitar and a slightly poppier sound, Sigur Rós is as accessible as ever. "Gobbledigook" is heartbreakingly beautiful.
mp3 Gobbledigook
1. Attack & Release by The Black Keys
Now for the best album of 2008. Attack & Release is perfection. Each song is a stand-alone wonder. Case in point. Every song I heard I desperately wanted to hear and see performed live. My favorite track, "Psychotic Girl" was my feel-good song for the year.

Now, Now Every Children - Cars
December 20th, 2008 18:07
Both Sides of the Mouth

Remember Now, Now Every Children? The band of four I posted on back in May? Well, now a band of two, Cacie Dalager and Bradley Hale dropped their debut full-length album Cars on the 9th, to the joy of Eisley and Paramore fans everywhere. Cars features the best from their two, previously released EPs, most notably "Not One, But Two" and "Everyone You Know," the first two tracks on the album. Also included are seven brand new releases which showcase the same child-like voice and trashy percussion that we've all come to know, love, and expect from the band.
Have they changed at all? Not, really. The three previous singles included in Cars were all rerecorded, but to be honest, I prefer the originals. Other than that, though, their new stuff is on the same wavelength as their old. My favorite new track would have to be "Sleep Though Summer," conveniently posted below for your listening pleasure. The unexpected chorus of voices presented through the verses poses as a pleasant surprise - Cacie's voice fits well with others. Even better is the beat, reminiscent of "Maps," which is one of my favorite songs of all time. "Little Brother" is also a favorite, with its melancholy, lullaby-like melody and sweet, nostalgic lyrics. "Little brother we're alright/just stay inside for now/but she'll stay in the photographs/the ones she had in white."
Although still a bit esoteric - what does "now, now every children" mean anyway - Now, Now Every Children delivers a sweet bit of post-teen angst indie rock, more legitimate than Paramore, less fruity than Mates of State, and a bit sadder than Eisley.

David Ford

Both Sides of the Mouth

David Ford. The leader of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland. Or. A British singer-songwriter who strongly reminds me of James Blunt (I'm surprised VH1 hasn't done a "You Should Know" on him, as well).
Formerly a part of the now disbanded group, Easyworld, Ford went solo in 2005. In 2007 he released Songs For The Road, a heartfelt compilation of poppy folk that would fit nicely in the background of an episode of Grey's or a somber scene of Weeds. Ridden with passion and sincerity, Ford's voice is the highlight of his music. With a light British accent underlying all his words, his lyrics just seem that much more poignant. Even hearing him tell me to "go to hell" makes me emotional.
David Ford began to gather a small following after a series of intimate solo shows he played throughout both the UK and here in the States, which should say a lot about his music. Soft, soothing, comforting, and of the coffee-shop variety. Romantic to the utmost, his music feeds into the poetic, mushy side of all of us.

Sex and the Ivy
I just got done reading old Facebook messages/emails for a fun new project involving my best friend (more on this later). So! I recalled some cool things about my formerly slutty existence. Initially, I thought I stopped updating this damn thing because an ex-lover posted my naked photos to the Internet, but then I remembered that I discovered monogamy shortly after that incident and promptly stopped having sex of the promiscuous variety, thereby eliminating 80 percent of my material.
But apparently, I used to have sex with lots of different people. And since my conquests are so numerous that I inevitably never get around to writing up all of them, I thought I should share some items from a year ago.
In late 2007, I was flirting/going out with six men simultaneously and getting laid by (almost) none of them. I think I only had sex four times last winter. #1 took place on my friend Zac’s 21st birthday after I brought some dude along and we mutually got obliterated at the Kong. Classy. #2 took place in a fraternity house of all places, but it was MIT so I think I can safely say that I’ve managed to avoid becoming a total college cliche. #3 took place post-nudie-pic scandal in Los Angeles with some dude I barely knew, while my girlfriend sat in his living room watching, um, cartoons (I think?) with his friend. AWKWARD. And I met/fucked #4 approximately five days before I went on my first date with Patrick. Little did I know then that it would be my last gasp of promiscuity for many many many months (and counting … yippee).
There might’ve been a fifth guy at some point, but I obviously don’t remember. If you’re him: it’s not that you’re insignificant; you just didn’t leave any traces in my Gmail/Facebook inbox. Sorry, dude.
This list, of course, does not count September or early fall which was a shitshow of recycled ex-hookups. Old lovers get much of the credit for keeping my sex life sustainable (pun alert!) over the years. After my sex-deprived summer in New York, I was determined to get laid as quickly as possible. Former flings are terribly effective solutions. And in general, I went out and went down almost every weekend so my abstinent streak ended pretty immediately.
Junior fall/winter was also the first time I rejoiced in singledom. I usually hated dating and hooking up because I was constantly attaching, detaching, reattaching myself to men. Last year, I was so cynical about the prospect of a long-term relationship that I spent the majority of my non-fucking time making condescending remarks about the guys I was fucking. (To be clear, these were not remarks said to their faces, but rather, to my friends or uh, blog readers.) This says a lot more about me than the guys, and to be fair to my friends, they were becoming increasingly alarmed at my utter pessimism, which I framed then as “realism”. (But even today, post-monogamy, I would still say that I am, for the most part, undateable. Or at least, my blog is understandably a huge red flag for potential suitors. So there you go, I am still a realist.)
Now I am months-deep in a relationship — free doggie included! — and routinely turn down date/sex offers from the boys who used to make my blog/life so interesting. In exchange, I get walks along the Charles, unsolicited career advice, solicited foot massages, and the assurance that I won’t contract herpes even if we forgo condoms. On the downside, this means I can’t throw him out of my dorm room every time we have a fight. Mostly because I live in his apartment and not a dorm room.
I feel like a younger, more Asian version of Jessica Cutler, the sex-blogging D.C. staffer turned housewife. It’s kind of like I spent the last year in a cocoon. I entered as a filthy, whorish caterpillar and now I’ve exited as a butterfly with remarkably domestic tendencies and a desire to mate for life.
In conclusion, this is why I don’t update my sex blog anymore.
Hopefully they don't bar me from practice for this

"Well you're not my type anyway, and even if you were, mummy would kick me out, brother would lock me in. But I know they won't, oh I know they won't."Dø - a band, a real good band.
Re - a person not in it at all.
Mi - a guy that likes the Dø.
Fa - I've still got a long, long way to go.
So - considering the above, I'm gonna stop myself while I still can. Sprouting roots in Helsinki and and Paris, the Dø is made up of Dan and Olivia - guess who belongs where - and as mentioned before, is a band, a real good band that does not involve a person named Re. Instruments in hand, the Dø are out to accomplish something. Naming themseves are the first and last note of the standard musical scale, this twofer hopes to cover every base from do to do knocking re, mi, fa, so, la and ti all back down the way. It is in this you'll find the the Dø's singularity - an attraction to numerous genres all minimized down to play a piece in their music. Give 'em a listen. You're bound to like something in their bit of everything.

Sex and the Ivy
“I mean, look at all these rich nerds with fetching Asian ladies on their arms. We don’t want to sound “offensive” but it’s just a thing, you know?”
—Gawker: Following Hallowed Nerd Tradition, Michael Phelps Dates Asian Chick
And in the comments:
“Asian is the last stop before Gay.” #
“My wife already knows when she’s tired of me and kicks me out that my next wife will come from Korea or Sri Lanka.” #
“Mr. Butterfly Champion gets his Madame Butterfly*.” #
“He so horny**!” #
“White nerds dating Asian girls is a trend. I don’t think it’s offensive to point it out.” #
SERIOUSLY?!
- My friends and I make plenty of offensive comments about each other’s race/sexual orientation/etc. but we do so in private. So though I’ve been referred to as a Madame Butterfly, these things are said in jest and directed toward me specifically by my friends specifically, not directed at an entire group of people by anonymous commenters who don’t know them.
- Some argue that there’s truth to some stereotypes like “Asians are the last stop to Gay”. However, I can think of lots of stereotypes out there (”Blacks are thugs,” “Gays are diseased,” “Fat people are lazy”, etc.) that shouldn’t ever be said out loud. Why? Oh, that’s right. Because they’re stereotypes, which by definition, means that they have no empirical basis.
- Interracial relationships are not “trends”. Trends go out of style. I’m pretty sure this isn’t just a hot commodity for the season.
- People have no filter on the Internet, especially not on websites like Gawker, because they mistake “being offensive” for “being controversial”. A racist remark isn’t snarky humor, it’s just racist.
Call this an overreaction, but I’m seriously disturbed by some of these comments. The Gawker article is offensive, sure, but considering the website’s habitual outrage at other people’s displays of ignorance, I’m going to chalk this up to a poor attempt at humor. The commenters, though? I guess they demonstrate that some people out there — educated or not — clearly need a crash course on racism and its seemingly harmless manifestations.
* For those unfamiliar with the opera, Madame Butterfly depicts the relationship between a condescending American and a self-sacrificing, exoticized Japanese woman, who gets abandoned (after marriage, mind you) for a new and improved American wife.
** A reference to the Vietnamese prostitute in Full Metal Jacket. Everyone’s heard “Me so horny. Me love you long time”; no one ever knows where it’s from. Now you do.

A Dark, Dark Friday MixAccording to Macy's, the holiday shopping season has officially begun, and on this, the blackest of Fridays, I have the pleasure of working in retail this year. There'll be tears. There'll be blood. There'll be savings, and there'll be a myriad of shoppers willing to give us retailers the first two all in the name of that third. "I've been on Altavista. I went twice on the Yahoo. And everywhere I go, there is always a clue, always something about you that may help me to get my hands on you."If you're sitting there puzzled as to why I put Annika Norlin into a frame full of animals, allow me this moment to explain. As I've well-established many times before, Alina and I here get a frighteningly large amount of emails, and on most days, I treat it all to a quick page skim. Unfortunately for Annika Norlin, this resulted me in forever recognizing Hello Saferide as "Hello Safari Ride." Now...who is this oft-mentioned Annika Norlin? Annika Norlin is the fresh face behind Hello Saferide/Hello Safari Ride, a solo, albeit friend-supported, act based out of Sweden. As if that last additional fact of her Swedeness isn't enough convincing for you, Norlin produces the sound of light, twinkly pop. A storyteller nature keeps you crouched in, sitting indian-style to embrace her sweet, sometimes creepy, tales.

Harbored in the young Seattle...uhn(?) *edit* Seattleite *, is an astonishing talent for music of symbiotic complexity and intelligence. Through Black Bear, Beebe reminds us that music is a craft, and Beebe definitely has the skull. Depositing layers upon layers, Beebe takes on the role of storyteller weaving spectacular imagery into every anecdotal song. Fun Fun Fun Fest '08 One Helluva Recap - Day TwoAt it's third year of age, Fun Fun Fun did not falter to the terrible threes. In fact, it shoved the number three in the face by giving us 2 days of music on 4 stages, none of which were trios - yes, not even the Golden Arm Trio was a threesome. Of the three major music festivals that grace this city, Fun Fun Fun Fest is certainly the locals' "secret." "M-m-m-music is is is is..."Around these days it seems like people are just slapping their work with the label of "instrumental" in an effort to justify their wordless noise or songs with failed lyrics, just like how we, back in high school, kept calling the crappiest of our work "abstract." But then you stumble onto an outfit like The Octopus Project, a true professional, and realize, despite those label-slappers, all is still well with instrumental music, and there are people out there who still care about what they're doing. The Octopus Project don't just go about crashing cymbals or pushing keys, they intricately compose their pieces to perfection, and they'll scream, "HOT SINNERS!" themselves if they have to - everything just goes together in the end. In what's a very welcome late addition to the Fun Fun Fun roster, Octopus Project are set to take stage 4 on Day 1.
